CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE ARTIST
ABOUT
Becky Rose is a contemporary landscape artist based in Chichester, West Sussex. A graduate of University College Falmouth with a BA in Fine Art, she has exhibited widely along the South Coast and in Wales. Her work has garnered recognition, including being shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and longlisted for the Jackson’s Art Prize.

Rose’s paintings delve into the emotional depths of the natural environment, with a particular focus on wild skies and mountainous landscapes. Her work explores the tension between the grounding tranquility these environments provide and their overwhelming, sometimes humbling, power.

In her oil paintings, Rose creates a sense of both distance and familiarity, drawing the viewer into a world of vast, untamed beauty. She is fascinated by the unknown secrets these landscapes hold, as well as the comfort they offer. Working intuitively, Rose allows her memory and emotions to guide the creative process, setting aside sketches and notes. This approach allows her paintings to evolve naturally, much like the landscapes themselves.

Rose’s connection to the wild elements of nature began at an early age, during annual trips to the mountains of North Wales. These adventures have since become a profound source of inspiration, with the mountains serving as both a second home and a sanctuary for reflection. Through her art, Rose seeks to share the clarity, serenity, and strength she finds within these landscapes.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"Mountains, vast skies, and shifting light stir something deep within me — a quiet joy that rises from the soul. They are places where I feel both small and infinite, grounded and free. Through painting, I try to capture this experience: the sensation of being enveloped by nature’s grandeur, then slowly drawn toward the fleeting details that linger in memory — a glint of light, the curve of a ridge, the hush before rain.

My process begins without a map. A single colour might set the tone — a ground of ochre, grey, or violet — but from there, instinct takes over. I follow the movement of the paint, letting forms emerge as if they were finding themselves. Layer by layer, the landscape unfolds; the rhythm slows, my brushes grow finer, and what began as gesture becomes focus, intimacy, stillness.

Colour is my language of memory. Every hue I use has been gathered from the wild — found in rock, mist, moss, or the fleeting light of dusk. These colours already exist in the world; I simply shift their scale, let them breathe, and allow them to become something new.

For me, painting is a way of returning — to the mountains, to the air, to the quiet strength that nature offers. Each work is a reflection of that journey: an attempt to hold, for a moment, the serenity and power that live within the landscape."
